“Big hat, no cattle” – is one of my favourite anecdotes in finance. It comes from the book “The Millionaire Next Door“, highlighting the idea that someone might look like a prosperous station owner – big hat, fine boots, flash car – but the reality is, it’s an illusion, there’s no cattle.
In my years as a family wealth adviser, I’ve seen this play out countless times. Successful professionals, living in beautiful homes, driving luxury cars, taking lavish holidays. But beneath the surface, there’s often a different story.
The hidden truth
I remember a couple I worked with – let’s call them the Smiths. On paper, they had it all. High-flying careers, a stunning home in a prestigious suburb, private school education for the kids.
But when we sat down to talk about their finances, the truth emerged. They were living month to month, with little savings and mounting anxiety about the future.
The Smiths aren’t alone. I have met many people in this predicament. They’re juggling the demands of their current lifestyle while hiding a gnawing doubt about their financial security.
Uncomfortable avoidance
It’s a tough spot to be in. There’s an unspoken pressure to keep up appearances, to match the lifestyle of peers and colleagues. But this often comes at the cost of true financial well-being.
I’ve found that couples often avoid these discussions. Life appears great on the surface, but there’s a hidden truth. “If only people knew our real financial circumstances,” many think. This thought alone is tough.
Breaking the cycle
In my experience, the first step towards change is acknowledging the reality of the situation. What’s the saying? All progress begins with the truth.
It’s about having those difficult conversations – first with yourself, then with your partner. It’s not easy, but it’s necessary.
Hiding from this reality just leads to more juggling, more stress. Stopping to confront this truth is the first step on the path to true wealth and prosperity.
A great first step is to think about your most important priorities. What truly matters? Is it the perception of wealth or actual financial security? Understanding your values can guide spending decisions and help create a more balanced approach to finances.

Small steps, big impact
I don’t have a silver bullet for you, but over the years we have helped many families move from drifting to deliberate.
I’ve seen couples transform their financial lives by simply opening up the dialogue around money. By setting realistic goals together, reviewing spending habits, and aligning their financial decisions with their long-term aspirations.
True wealth
Remember, true wealth isn’t always visible. It’s often found in financial security, peace of mind, and the freedom to make choices. By focusing on building actual wealth rather than its appearance, you can create a more stable and satisfying future.
The journey from “big hat, no cattle” to genuine financial well-being is as personal as it is unique. It requires honesty, open communication, and sometimes, difficult decisions. But the reward – a life of enjoyment and security – is well worth the effort.
So, if you find yourself with a big hat but worried about the cattle, know that you’re not alone.
