Tyler Ellery is a great example of someone who, early in his professional career, has grasped development with both hands. Tyler’s journey highlights that the projection of your career is influenced not only by your willingness to grow but the support of the people around you. We asked him about his Professional Year experience in the hope it will shed light on the value of a growth-driven culture.

The Professional Year

The Professional Year is a 12-month period where aspiring financial advisers complete advice-based work under supervision. Upon successful completion, candidates can provide financial advice. Tyler shares where he found the most value through this experience.

“The greatest value I gained from doing the Professional Year was shadowing an adviser and working closely with them to be able to help our clients. Instead of just technical work, we were one-on-one planning how to best address the client’s needs. Then, my biggest accomplishment was completing the exam. Passing the exam means you gained the necessary skills and understanding to deliver advice. It allowed me to move through to a new phase of my career and a new role, which allowed me to support our clients in a way that I hadn’t been able to before”.

The influence of support

No one succeeds alone. It takes a collective commitment to do the right thing to improve the lives of Capital Partners clients. Tyler highlights how support from team members was crucial throughout his journey.

“There are so many people I could lean on who could provide guidance and insight. It helped me achieve the level of knowledge that I was wanting to attain and opened my eyes to all the areas where I could expand my skills. Growth and development are huge to the team, and we’re supported to achieve our aspirations. Everyone is focused on how we can improve ourselves and our clients’ lives, as well as looking forward to building a bigger future together. Essentially, we all have the mindset and collaborative nature to get to our end goal”.

Advice for career seekers

Contrary to popular belief, great financial advisers don’t need to be mathematicians. It’s a steadfast desire to genuinely help people that make the best financial advisers. We asked Tyler for his advice for those considering a career in financial planning.

“For aspiring advisers, I recommend you start working out what it is you love doing and how you love to help people. Most importantly though, my advice is to let the people around you know so that they can help you get to where you want to be. I found financial planning by accident. I went to university straight out of school and jumped into IT but realised it wasn’t quite for me. The dad of my friend was in financial planning, and I thought it sounded like something I would like. I pursued it at university and enjoyed it, then found work after graduation, and loved it”.


The financial planning industry is desperate for more talented professionals to take up the space as a career. If you have the willingness to learn and grow, there is likely a place for you.
